Howdy Dare 2B Artzy fans! Hope you’re having fun and getting
lots of inspiration from the Design Team with our unique Spring 3-D Hop.
I think anything that involves playing with paper and making 3-D projects is
always so much fun. It’s awesome to utilize the beautiful paper in my stash
to create a fabulous project that I can in turn give as a unique gift.
The best part about my project today is that it really doesn’t involve any fancy steel dies (although you can use one small one) and there is no need to use a machine to cut anything out. We’re keeping this simple and using our hands and creativity.
To create this project, all you need is your favorite
Dare 2B Artzy paper, scissors, glue runner or liquid glue, pencil, score board and one (or a few) of the Kleenex small plastic individual packs that you toss into your purse. Once you’ve made one of these, I know you’ll want to make more.
I learned about this project from the very talented
Taniesa Vlasak and absolutely fell in love because it was just too cute. Today I’m sharing my take on the project – it’s an adorable miniature Kleenex box. I figured with Spring and everything in bloom right now, you can never have too many Kleenex around to battle the sneezing, itchy & watery eyes of the Spring allergy season. I know I’ve been battling the Springtime allergies here lately.
Here’s a peek at the finished project – too cute, am I right?
To start you’ll need a piece of cardstock paper. I recommend water-color cardstock if you’re going to be painting or doing any kind of mixed mediums to decorate with, otherwise a good 80-110 lb cardstock will work.
You’ll cut your cardstock down to be 7 1/2 inches x 8 inches.
Next, you’re going to score the cardstock.
With the 7 1/2″ side at the top edge of your score board:
Score at 2 1/4″
Score at 3 1/2″
Score at 5 3/4″
Score at 7″
It should look like this
Then you’ll turn your paper so that the 8″ side is at the top edge of your score board:
Score at 1/2″
Score at 1 3/4″
Score at 6 1/4″
and finally Score at 7 1/2″
It should look like this when you’re done
With all of your lovely score lines created, you’re now ready to cut and create the fold lines. To demonstrate where the cut and fold lines are, I’ve taken a picture for you to reference. The lines in red represent where you’ll need to make some cuts with your scissors. The lines in blue are where you’ll fold your paper. You’ll see the outline of your finished, unfolded box here in my picture.
Here’s what it will look like once you cut all of the red lines and remove the excess paper:
Whoo-hoo, hard part is done! Now on to the crafty part – decorating the box.
If you’ve used water-color paper you’d want to tape this down to a solid surface and water color it or decorate with your medium of choice and then allow to dry before assembling the box.
For my box, I went ahead and folded at the score lines and then masked with washi tape before sponging on some oxide inks in blue and green. I added a few spritzes of water once I was finished to play up the oxidation. I played with the placement of my stamps so that I’d be sure to leave a space big enough to cut a hole in the top of the box to pull the Kleenex through. This is where I say that using a die is optional. I happened to have a small scalloped circle die that I die cut the center hole from, but you could certainly simply pencil on or use an outline to trace a shape that you could cut with scissors or an X-acto knife as well. I sort of half assembled the box and slid the little Kleenex pack into it to figure out placement of my die for the opening in the top.
For the sides and ends of my box, I cut some small pieces of paper that were 1/8″ smaller than the sides of my box from the Dare 2B Artzy
Paisley Paper Pack and glued them in place. Of course the stamps from Paisley Bliss coordinate beautifully with the Paisley paper which makes pulling this project together a breeze.
I thought the Find your Bliss sentiment was fun for this project when you consider that it’s Kleenex, LOL!
With the box decorated, it was now time to finish the assembly. The long rectangle area with no flaps will form the top of your box and the small flap on the opposite side will be glued to the inside of the top to form the box shape when you crease at all the fold lines. Then it’s just a matter of folding in your ends. I decided on one end to place a tiny amount of glue on the little flap and just fold it into the inside to glue one side shut completely. The other side is left so that the box can be refilled easily.
I hope you enjoyed this Spring 3-D Project as much as I did. It is such a cute project and aside from Spring allergies, it would make a fun bridesmaid or mothers keepsake for a wedding, a thank you for a teacher/co-worker, decorate and give as a gift to your local book club members when you’re reading that particularly emotional best seller. This little Kleenex box project could be used for so many occasions.
