Artzy, Inky and Grungy – Oh My!

Today I’m getting a little extra Artzy with a couple of Dare 2B Artzy’s newest releases! The Renew & Flourish and Inked & Weathered stamp sets are perfect for creating all kinds of inky, grungy, textured projects—whether you’re making cards, junk journals, or scrapbook layouts.

For today’s project, I decided to create a card.

To begin, I dug through my stash of backgrounds from a previous Artzy crafting session. I had used a gel plate, texture pastes, and an inked brayer to create several colorful backgrounds full of wonderful texture. After they dried, I trimmed them into smaller panels to save for future projects.

For this card, I chose a background featuring soft pinks and minty greens with lots of interesting texture.

Next, I grabbed the Lacey Leaves Stencil along with some texture paste from my stash. I couldn’t resist pairing it with a rich purple color! Positioning the stencil at an angle across one side of the background, I spread a thin layer of the colored texture paste through the stencil using a palette knife.

Once I was happy with the result, I immediately washed both the stencil and palette knife before the paste had a chance to dry. It’s much easier than trying to remove dried texture paste later!

While the background dried, I moved on to the focal images.

Using the Renew & Flourish stamp set, I stamped one of the floral images onto light gray cardstock and colored it with my Copic markers. These images are wonderfully quick and easy to color, but they would also look beautiful with simple ink blending if you prefer that technique.

After coloring, I used the coordinating dies to cut out the floral image. Before setting it aside, I lightly blended Black Soot Distress Ink around the edges to create a soft shadow while leaving the center brighter. I also ran the die-cut edges across the ink pad to eliminate the bright white edge for a more finished look.

Next, I stamped the standalone leafy branch from the same set twice onto iridescent vellum using embossing ink. After covering the images with Detailed Black Embossing Powder and heat setting them, I die cut both branches. I loved how they echoed the stenciled leaves in the background while adding another layer of texture.

By this time, my stenciled background was completely dry, so it was time to add even more interest. I reached for the Inked & Weathered stamp set, which includes a variety of distressed textures such as honeycomb, splatter, and woven patterns. I chose the burlap-like texture and stamped it in the upper right corner with embossing ink. After adding aqua embossing powder and heat setting it, the beautiful teal shimmer really stood out against the background.

For the sentiment, I stamped Renew along with the small No. 16120 image onto shiny black cardstock using white pigment ink. I embossed it with Fine Detail White Embossing Powder, then die cut it using a flag die from the Wavy Slimline Framelets Dies.

No mixed media card feels complete without a little splatter! I flicked Distress Spritz in Hickory Smoke over the background for a subtle shimmer and also gave the panel a light mist for extra sparkle. Then I dipped the sprayer tube from Wilted Violet Distress Spritz onto the colored flower, creating several larger purple droplets. They added just the right amount of artistic flair.

Now it was time to assemble everything.

I trimmed the background to 3¾” x 4½” using a deckled edge trimmer. The embossed vellum leaves were adhered with small dots of liquid glue, followed by the sentiment banner along the right side of the card.

To give the floral image dimension, I attached it with foam adhesive, placing it slightly off-center. The completed panel was then mounted onto a 4″ x 4⅞” piece of black cardstock using foam tape before adhering everything to a top-folding A2 card base made from 110 lb cardstock.

For the finishing touch, I added a few teal gems around the purple stenciled vines to tie in the embossed teal texture in the upper corner and add a bit more sparkle.

While this may not be your traditional grungy mixed media card, I absolutely love how all the colors, textures, and shimmering details came together. It’s the perfect balance of soft florals and distressed elements.
