Dare 2B Artzy July Challenge – Layers!

Whoo-hoo! Happy 4th of July Eve and welcome to another Dare 2B Artzy Challenge! This month’s theme is LOTS OF LAYERS!

7.3.16 Layers Challenge

We want everyone to play along with this challenge and show us how many layers you can get onto your card or project featuring any of the Dare 2B Artzy stamps! There’s a prize for the winner of this challenge: One Dare 2B Artzy Stamp set of your choice and a premium ink pad of your choice. Trust me – there are some amazing new stamps coming out soon – you don’t want to miss an opportunity to win a free set!!!

My project for this challenge features another adorable Feather Friends, Owl stamp set called Patriotic Owl. This is an actual 4th of July / Patriotic stamp set. I’m a big fan of all of the Dare 2B Artzy owls – they’re all just too cute! Don’t forget that for all the different owls that are available there are also two dies that will work with the owl stamps – TWO – that’s all. None of this buying a different die for each stamp that’s released. Dare 2B Artzy makes is simple with just two dies that work with all of the owls (or many of the other stamps as well). You can find the die that works with the Patriotic Owl here.

On to the Layers Challenge! I went full court press on this challenge. My card measures 6 ½ tall x 6 ¾ wide. The card has nine base layers plus the owl and the sentiment tag has two layers. Boy what a blast it was to create! This was actually the first time I’ve ever created a card with so many layers.I bet I could have snuck a couple more layers in if I’d tried.

The longest part of the process to create this card was pairing up papers to work together for all of my layers. I actually spent an hour looking at my cardstock stash trying to decide what worked (and realized that I have a ton of paper and must resist buying more, LOL!).  Since it was a 4th of July themed card, I went with the traditional red and blue and then sort of went with an antique or off-white to pair with it.

Once I had all my card stock selected I went ahead and began die cutting it using a pierced square die set. I actually cut several of each color so that I could play with the layering of the colors to see what worked together the best.  Because I’m not much of a pre-planner when it comes to making my cards, it’s sometimes a trial & error process to figure out a layout I think will look good. Next, I cut my base layers from a rectangle die set and the card base from some white 110 lb cardstock.

Once the main layers were cut and arranged in the order that they’d go on the card I set them aside.

Next, I stamped my owl and colored him/her with my Copics.  I opted to go with off-white on the owl’s body to keep it sort of neutral since I knew that the rest of it would be colored in red, white and blue as well as my card layers.

When my owl was completely colored, I did add a touch of Wink of Stella clear glitter pen to give it a bit of sparkle. Finally I fussy cut it out and set it aside.

As I began to play with the layers of cardstock again, I realized that aside from all the layers, the card needed some pizzazz and I remembered I had an awesome star border die that would work perfectly since it was about the length of my largest rectangle piece of cardstock.

I cut two of the star borders in red and glued them between the card base and the blue layer. Immediately the card popped like a firework in action.

I placed a layer of newsprint cardstock as my 3rd rectangle layer and then proceeded to glue together the six square layers featuring the Dare 2B Artzy’s Artzy Doodles paper in red and blue patterned paper, then a shimmery layer of antique white and two layers of glittered cardstock in red and blue.  Once the six layers were glued together I turned them so that they’d be offset against the rectangle background.  I actually had to turn the entire card over and mark with a pencil on the back of the squares so that I’d know where to place my tape runner to adhere the two together.

Finally, I added my little patriotic owl to the top layer with a piece of dimensional foam.

My sentiment, Happy 4th of July is also from the Patriotic Owl stamp set. I heat embossed it in red onto some shimmery white paper and die cut it into a tag shape.  Next, I die cut a second, larger tag out of some blue glitter cardstock and layered the two together. I used some dimensional foam to adhere it to the card. I glued a small red and white checked bow to the sentiment tag as well.

Once all my layers were set I added a couple of red sugar dots to the card as well as a bottle cap that says July 4th inside of it. The bottle cap was just a fun piece of added dimension to the card.

Whew! That’s a lot of layers! Hope you’re going to get in on the fun for this challenge. Again, there’s a stamp set of your choice and a premium ink pad from Dare 2B Artzy for the winner of this month’s Layer’s challenge – you don’t want to miss out on that! Show us your layered up, decked out cards – we’d love to see your creativity for this challenge!
